Architecture School Facts
  • MIT's architecture department opened in 1868 with four students in the four-year course.


  • At the last US department of Energy's Solar Decathlon competition (held every two years, challenging 20 university teams to design and build the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered home), students from University of Maryland took second place, behind a team from Germany.


  • Students in Cornell University's Department of Architecture spend a semester abroad in Rome to study the intersection of history and architectural design.


  • UC Berkeley's College of Environmental Design was the first to combine the disciplines of architecture, planning, and landscape architecture into a single college.


  • Boston Architectural College offers a unique "concurrent learning" model, in which students work at approved, paid positions during the day -- the "practice" component of the curriculum -- while studying several evenings a week at the college-- the "academic" component.


  • The School of Architecture at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign hosts a pre-college "discover architecture" program for high school students.
