Assigning a Novel to Business Students Sends a Message about Pace University Business School: Dean Joseph Baczko gives 900 new undergraduates "The Namesake"

Featured Programs:
  Lubin School of Business
Dean Joseph Baczko of Pace University's Lubin School of Business sent a no-nonsense signal this summer about the way his school is increasing its focus on global perspectives and cross-disciplinary problem solving. He put in a bulk order to Houghton-Mifflin for 900 paperback copies of "The Namesake," the 2003 novel by Pulitzer-Prize-winner Jhumpa Lahiri that recently was made into a movie. Baczko made the book the first assignment for newly-matriculating undergraduate business students, handing out books and discussion questions as students arrived for orientation over the summer. On Tuesday, September 4, Baczko will greet students and explain his goals to kick off several dozen discussions of the book for Lubin students. In each, some 20 students and a faculty or staff member will explore the novel's bittersweet themes of coming of age and coming to terms with the values of one's family and culture. Media are welcome. The Manhattan sessions begin at 10 AM at 1 Pace Plaza, east of City Hall. The Pleasantville sessions start at 2 PM in the Gottesman Room of the Kessel Student Center, 861 Bedford Road (Entrance 3), Pleasantville. To attend, please contact Pace Public Information at 212-346-1117, 917-608-8164, or ccory@pace.edu. In a letter to students, Baczko said the book is "entertaining and fun to read," but added that the themes are "important in today's 'flat world.' As business majors, the role of immigrants in the U.S. and adaptation of people new cultures is an important topic that will be incorporated into numerous courses you take." The mix of business and literature is a first taste of a new, multidisciplinary teaching emphasis at Lubin that culminates in an MBA curriculum based on collaborative approaches to solving concrete business problems. Baczko adds: "Nonfiction can't always let you experience life the way people live it and feel it. We think this will motivate students to better understand human behavior and get them away from the stereotype that business is mostly finance, strategy, logistics and control. We teach those rigorously, but more than ever, success takes the ability to see beyond functional boundaries." "Besides," he says, "having a book in common gives everyone an icebreaker for getting through those first awkward conversations." Blockbuster. Dean of Lubin since 2005, Baczko is a former president of Blockbuster Entertainment and Toys "R" Us International and CEO of Max Factor (Europe). He is a graduate of Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service.

Georgia Institute of Technology: Business School Performs Well in Recent MBA, Undergrad Rankings

Featured Programs:
Earlier this year, Georgia Tech College of Management jumped nine spots in U.S. News & World Report's annual rankings of the nation's top full-time MBA programs, rising from 34th to 25th Georgia Tech College of Management recently rose in rankings of Forbes (for top MBA programs) and U.S. News & World Report (for undergraduate business programs) while winning recognition in Fortune Small Business as one of "America's Best Colleges for Entrepreneurs." Georgia Tech's business school jumped 11 spots in Forbes magazine's MBA rankings, rising to 34th (15th among public universities). Forbes bases its rankings, which are issued every two years, on graduates' return on investment, meaning compensation five years after graduation minus tuition and forgone salary during school. "We're pleased that our considerable jump in the rankings reflects the overall trajectory of our business school," says Georgia Tech College of Management Dean Steve Salbu. "We're working hard on many fronts to take our College to the next level of prestige and educational achievement, becoming the world's preeminent business school for management and technology." In its first-time rankings of "America's Best Colleges for Entrepreneurs," Fortune Small Business listed Georgia Tech College of Management among the 26 top schools for MBAs and among the 24 best for double major/cross disciplinary students (i.e. business and engineering). The magazine, which is including the rankings in its September issue, didn't assign a specific order (1st, 2nd, etc.) to schools listed. U.S. News & World Report ranked Georgia Tech's undergraduate business program 33rd in the nation, up two spots from last year. In specialty areas, the magazine ranked the business school eighth in Quantitative Analysis, 10th for Production and Operations Management, and 15th for Management Information Systems.

U.S. News & World Report: Look for Bowling Green State University Programs

Featured Programs:
Bowling Green State University is among a select number of universities with "programs to look for" in the 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges" published by U.S.News & World Report. The University's supply chain management program moved up in the national ranking, tying for 16th place. Supply chain management, offered by BGSU's College of Business Administration, is primarily concerned with the planning, acquisition, conversion, flow and distribution of goods from raw materials to finished products. Graduates of the program are in demand nationwide. It is the sixth straight year the magazine has published a list of schools with outstanding examples of academic programs commonly linked to student success. BGSU has been listed each of the last five years. This year the University is cited for its first-year experience programs and learning communities. First-year experience programs include orientation for new students and other academic programs that bring small groups of students together with faculty or staff on a regular basis. At BGSU that includes UNIV 100 success courses, Springboard, BG Experience® and the common reading experience, as well as special publications and services for freshmen-including a librarian dedicated to helping students learn how to use the library, conduct research and use other resource materials. Learning communities feature small-group settings where students with a common interest live and study together. BGSU learning communities include the Arts Village, Honors Community, Health Sciences, La Maison Française, Chapman Community at Kohl and the Global Village, among others. The magazine compiled the lists of outstanding programs by working with the Association of American Colleges and Universities to identify the types of programs that enhance student success. The editors then sought nominations from colleges and universities to identify which campuses offer "stellar examples" of such programs.
