LeBow College of Business Students Win Top Honors in Marketing Competition

Featured Programs:
  LeBow College of Business
As part of Project Acceleration: The Subaru Impreza Collegiate Challenge, 19 students from the LeBow College of Business formed Six Star Associates and created a successful marketing campaign with only a $3,000 budget. Six Star Associates created the "falling in love with a Subaru" concept and implemented it through different mediums (i.e. Internet, public relations, events, print ads, and videos). The campaign was created to increase Gen Y awareness of the new Subaru Impreza. After 10 weeks of hard work and dedication, Six Star Associates placed in the top two in this national competition that involved nine schools and were invited to visit Subaru's Headquarters. On December 17-18, six members of Six Star Associates headed to Cherry Hill, NJ to visit Subaru of America to network and compete for the first place title against a fierce competitor- the University of New Mexico. During the two-day stay in Cherry Hill, the students presented their "Falling in Love with a Subaru" concept at Subaru of America's headquarters to the company's marketing representatives, which included Subaru's Chief Marketing Officer. After the final presentation, Drexel University placed second overall and was awarded $1,500- an award with which the members of Six Star Associates decided to create a scholarship for a LeBow College of Business student that will be given at an upcoming Honors Day.

LeBow College Team is a Finalist in Chevrolet College Marketing Challenge

Featured Programs:
  LeBow College of Business
A team of undergraduate students from Drexel University's LeBow College of Business will be traveling to Detroit, Mich., as finalists in the Chevrolet College Marketing Challenge. The students will present a marketing plan to executives from Chevrolet, and communications agencies Campbell Ewald and McGinn MS&L, as they vie for top honors in Chevrolet's "Green Marketing to the Youth Market." The marketing proposal promotes the venerable automobile manufacturer's fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly and technology advanced vehicles to the 18 to 30 year-old demographic. The Drexel students were selected from more than 50 college and university teams that participated in the competition. The Drexel team - sophomores Abby Dineen, Stevland Polite, Elizabeth Kantner, and Shawn Engmann - created a media/marketing plan that includes a T-shirt design contest, advertising on Facebook and Myspace, filming a "he/she looks good in green" commercial, and establishing a Web site: www.ilookgoodingreen.com. The proposal also calls for a tour that will transport the environmentally friendly car to the six most populous cities in the nation. The teams are competing for their proposals to be integrated into a Chevrolet marketing campaign, cash prizes and possible opportunities to intern at Chevrolet, Campbell Ewald, or McGinn MS&L.

Prairie View AandM University Announces Largest Enrollment Ever

Featured Programs:
  College of Engineering
Today, Prairie View A&M University announced the university's largest enrollment in its 131-year history. The total fall 2007 enrollment of 8,382 is the highest in the university's history. This enrollment status represents a 4.7 percent increase over fall 2006. Enrollment at the university also reached a peak at 8,350 in fall 2004. "This historic enrollment reflects our commitment to increasing the university's enrollment each year. I'm excited about this milestone in our history and proud of the university's faculty and staff who worked collaboratively with high school and community college staff members to make this achievement a reality," said PVAMU President George C. Wright. In recent years, the university has expanded its graduate programs and strengthened recruitment for its specialized undergraduate programs. With funding awarded by the Texas legislature, the university constructed and completed five new state-of-the-art buildings, all with a goal to allocate for an expanded student population and academic programs. The newest additions to the campus landscape include the Nathelyne Archie Kennedy Building, which primarily houses the School of Architecture; the Elmer E. O'Banion Science Building; the Electrical Engineering Building; the Juvenile Justice and Psychology and Texas Crime Prevention Center Building; and the College of Nursing Building, located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston. PVAMU's increased enrollment can also be linked to several of its new academic programs. Since 2003, the university has consistently added new master's and doctorate degree programs including a doctorate degree in educational leadership and several master's level programs in engineering. To meet the increasing demand for skilled nurse faculty members, the university also has pending plans to implement a doctorate degree in nursing. Founded in 1876, Prairie View A&M University is the second oldest public institution of higher education in Texas. With an established reputation for producing engineers, nurses and educators, PVAMU offers baccalaureate degrees in 50 academic majors, 37 master's degrees and four doctoral degree programs through nine colleges and schools. A member of The Texas A&M University System, the university is dedicated to fulfilling its land-grant mission of achieving excellence in teaching, research and service. During the university's history, nearly 50,000 academic degrees have been awarded.

Alfred State College: Student Life, Technology & Trends: 1908-2008

Featured Programs:
Alfred State College staff members and current and retired faculty have contributed items for the featured exhibit in the Hinkle Library Gallery and Reading Room entitled "Student Life, Technology & Trends: 1908 - 2008." Part of the College's Centennial Celebration, this exhibit showcases images of student life over the past century, and is paired with a collection of everyday and specialized items introduced over the same time period. Funds for the exhibit were provided by an ASC Centennial Committee grant which covered the reproduction and professional mounting of photographs, as well as the purchase of two new exhibit cases. The exhibit features many items that present-day students have never seen, including vacuum tubes from the 1940s, rotary phones, an early transistor radio, early computer storage media from punch cards to eight-inch floppies, and a galvanometer used at the College during World War II. 1970-era equipment and records from WETD, the College radio station, and several early Brownie cameras are also included. The exhibit will run until the middle of January.

Bucknell University: Electrical Engineers 2nd in Networking Competition

Featured Programs:
  College of Engineering
A team of Bucknell electrical engineering students took second place in a computer networking competition sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The 2007 MANIAC Challenge, organized by two professors from Virginia Tech and held in the nation's capital, brought together teams from around the world to compete in a challenge that combined sophisticated wireless ad hoc networking and game theory. Team Bucknell, comprising seniors Richard Clark of Broomall, Pa., Braden Izumi of Glendale, Calif., and Kafu Chau of York, Pa., competed under the direction of Michael Thompson, assistant professor of electrical engineering. First place went to the University of North Carolina-Charlotte.
Impressive Results
"What makes the Bucknell team's result more impressive is that our students, as undergraduates, were competing with teams primarily composed of graduate students," said Thompson. The communications challenge within an ad hoc network is that not all nodes communicate directly with each other. To send a message to a node on the other side of a network, a node may need to rely on its neighbors to pass the message to the correct node. However, forwarding messages consumes time and battery power, so a node may choose not to forward a message and the message will be lost. Further complicating the situation, as in the real world, is if a node is uncooperative, its neighbors may respond accordingly by not cooperating with it.
Forwarding strategy
"The challenge facing competitors was to design a forwarding strategy that minimized the amount of amount of forwarding work, while trying to ensure that it still received its traffic from its neighbors," said Thompson.
