Youngstown State University: First Place Bank Gives $500,000 to YSU Campaign
First Place Bank Community Foundation has donated $500,000 to Youngstown State University's Centennial Capital Campaign to help construct a new building for the Williamson College of Business Administration. The First Place Community Foundation was established to assist with local economic development, charitable needs and education. It is the largest corporate gift to the Centennial Capital Campaign thus far. First Place Bank's longstanding, generous support of YSU reflects the bank's commitment to the university, Youngstown and the entire Mahoning Valley," said David C. Sweet, YSU president. The gift will go toward the construction of a new $30 million building for YSU's business college. The stateoftheart facility will be located between the YSU campus and downtown Youngstown, connecting the university and the community. First Place is committed to investing in Youngstown State University, the renaissance of the city of Youngstown and the people of the Mahoning Valley. This is our home, where we live and work, and we are committed to sustaining and improving the quality of life for everyone here in the Valley," said Steven R. Lewis, chief executive officer of First Place Bank. First Place Bank has established a tradition of support for YSU. Over the past nine years, First Place has contributed over $200,000. These funds have been allocated to the following projects: the Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center, the Northeast Ohio Robotics Competition, the Mahoning River Education Project, the Rich Center for Autism, student scholarships, the YSU Sponsorship Program, Homework Express and Run with the Penguins. The partnership between First Place Bank and YSU has produced several directors and members of the First Place management team: Don Cagigas, a 1963 YSU graduate and a member of the YSU Board of Trustees, is a member of the First Place Bank Board of Directors; Ronald Volpe, YSU professor of accounting and finance, and YSU graduates Tom Humphries and Robert Wagmiller are also members of the bank's board; Dave Jenkins, executive director of the First Place Bank Community Foundation, is a 1973 YSU graduate. In addition, 81 of the bank's employees are alumni or are currently attending YSU. First Place Bank's gift is an important investment in the Williamson College of Business Administration and our community," said Betty Jo Licata, dean of the college. "We are grateful for their generosity and look forward to their continued involvement in the college and the education of our students." The gift is part of YSU's $43 million Centennial Capital Campaign. The fiveyear campaign, tied to YSU's centennial in 2008, is the largest in the university's history and is a partnership between YSU and The YSU Foundation. The gift from First Place brings the total raised thus far to $30 million. The campaign is led by a 15member cabinet, chaired by Tony Lariccia, vice president for Merrill Lynch in Canfield and a 1966 YSU graduate.

Philadelphia's entrepreneurial community explored the virtual community, witnessed what could be the next big ideas in technology and heard a unique perspective on risk taking and entrepreneurial passion at the 2007 Entrepreneurship Conference hosted by Drexel University's LeBow College of Business Laurence A. Baiada Center for Entrepreneurship in Technology. Keynote speaker Phillip Garfinkle '83, founder, Picture Vision; executive chairman, A21; CEO, Navig 8; and founder and managing partner, Trust Strategy Group, summed up the conference appropriately when he said that entrepreneurs "have a passion about what they are doing. And that passion is something they want to share with other people."Such passion was evident as the six finalists in the Baiada Center Business Plan Competition gave their presentations to a panel of judges and to the approximately 150 event attendees. The final pitches included ideas that could change the world - such as a technology to help patients with neurological disorders - to ideas that would revolutionize the beauty and leisure industries.
First prize went to Renaissance Scientific LLC which plans to license its intellectual property to manufacture male latex condoms containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), a product that is spermicidal, destroys pathogens transmitted sexually, including HIV and the cause of cervical cancer, human papillomavirus; and is much safer for women than the spermicide currently used in a wide-variety of condoms on the market, nonoxynol-9. Subsequently, Renaissance Scientific will develop SDS as a female-controlled vaginal microbicide to protect women from sexually transmitted infections. The Renaissance Scientific team consisting of Dr. Sandra Urdaneta and Lucian Herciu, both from LeBow College, and partners Dr. Mary K. Howett and Dr. John Kreider will receive $12,000 in cash, and $34,000 in combined in-kind support from CMF Associates ($24,000) and Hunter ($10,000). AcquaSTAR, Inc., a team of Drexel MBA candidates including Matthew Morano, Jarek Checinski, Wai Kiu Lee, and Lou Savastini, earned second place for their plan to produce a reliable low-energy solution that produces safe drinking water. ACM Advisors LLC ($2,500) and Communications Services & Support (up to $12,500) will provide $15,000 of in-kind support in addition to the $8,000 in cash AcquaSTAR will receive. Third place was awarded to Neuthao Technologies, a biomedical device company with a plan to design, develop, manufacture and market closed-loop neuro-modulation devices for patients suffering from neurological disorders. The team of Andrew Khair from Drexel's School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, Danny Tan and Terence Chia received $4,000 in cash and in-kind support services totaling $5,000 from ThreeZero Communications. The top three companies will have the opportunity to launch their ventures from the Baiada Center Business Incubator.
