Page 1 Engineering and computer science students are evaluated by exams, lab work, quizzes, and projects. Infrequently, they write papers. Professors want to see that students can apply and implement their knowledge. Engineering studies - also referred to as the "Applied Sciences" - involves a lot of lab work where students can apply the concepts that they learn in class. Students may take as many as three or four labs in a semester, depending on their course load. For example, in an electronics lab, students will build and analyze common electrical and transistor circuits. Working in groups is also a big part of what engineers do. Usually during the course of a project, from idea to sale, many people will work on a project. Engineers may need to confer with colleagues, researchers, technical writers, project managers, clients and sales people in order to do their jobs. Group projects and lab work prepare students for this aspect of working as an engineer. Computer science students take mainly lecture and lab classes, with programming assignments. Full-time students take between 4 and 6 classes in a semester, and are generally required to take classes in mathematics and calculus. As in any engineering discipline, it is important for students to be able to work in groups to do lab work and complete projects. Computer science students are evaluated on how they apply the concepts that they learn in class. |
