Page 1 Most BSN degrees take 4 years to complete for students who do not already have an undergraduate degree. Those who do have an undergrad degree, especially in a science, may be eligible for a program that will allow some of their undergrad credits to go towards their nursing degree. Some schools have accelerated options for RNs and other students who want to complete the program in two years. There also may be flexible classes for LPNs and RNs who want to earn a BSN while continuing to work as nurses. Nursing students take a variety of classes, including labs, lectures and seminars. In the first two years of a 4-year program, nursing students take a variety of liberal arts and science courses. For example, students may take classes in English, Biochemistry, Sociology, and Anatomy in the first 2 years of a 4-year program. Some of these are prerequisites for the nursing program, while some are electives. Nursing students may also take an introductory nursing course that gives them a taste of what nursing is like. Nursing students are graded on a combination of exams, projects, and participation. In the upper years of many nursing programs, test questions may be NCLEX type questions in order to prepare students for writing the board exams. They may also keep journals for their clinical experience. Journals allow students to reflect on their nursing practice, and help them improve it. |
