Fashion and Wardrobe Consultant

Description

What would a boss do if his or her employees started showing up to work in ratty sweatsuits? Although the offices may not be open to the public, he or she still wants to maintain a professional atmosphere before staff start showing up in pajamas with slippers in tow. But how does a boss bring this up? How to they convey and define an appropriate dress code while making sure that employees understand they do not need to begin wearing high heels or suits and ties.

Recently, companies who have found their staff too casual have started hiring fashion and wardrobe consultants to host seminars on smart, comfortable dressing for the office. Individuals who want to change their overall style also use these fashion experts to improve their looks, their self-esteem, even their relationships! The way we feel about ourselves can really affect how we interact with the rest of the world, our professional behavior at the workplace, and the way we feel inside. Amazingly, finding a style of jacket that accentuates your good features, or a style of pants that fits perfectly to your shape, can drastically modify your outlook in a number of ways.

Fashion and wardrobe consultants focus on colors, styles, accessories, and even hair and makeup. They make sure they keep on top of the latest trends in haute couture and figure out ways to translate the looks into more affordable and less extreme business, casual, and social wear. They work with large groups of company employees, teenagers, business executives and celebrities - any one who wants to make a good impression, change their style, or update their look.

Some fashion and wardrobe consultants work for department stores and retail chains, while others simply attract new clients through word of mouth. Wherever they work, and whoever they advise, fashion and wardrobe consultants know that image is important, and creating a stylish, unique image is often the key to positive self-esteem and success in both business and social spheres.

  Interests and Skills
Successful fashion and wardrobe consultants have an extremely good eye for fashion, and are in tune with the latest trends, styles, and looks that are making a splash in the world of high style. It is important for these individuals to be sensitive to others, respectful of people's individual tastes, body types, and lifestyles. They should be tactful as well as tasteful, and excellent communicators. Being an avid shopper who enjoys spending time with others doesn't hurt!

  Typical Tasks
  • Meet with clients to discuss current wardrobe
  • Show samples of possible clothing, accessories and styles
  • Assist people in closet organization
  • Demonstrate hair, makeup and accessories
  • Host large seminars and private consultations
  • May meet with clients every season or once a year to update wardrobe
  • For fashion and wardrobe consultants, each day is different. They spend most of each day working with clients, actively shopping and trying on clothing as well as sitting with them to discuss fashion and lifestyle. They also make phone calls, manage their finances, and complete reports about services rendered. Some wardrobe consultants travel to fashion hubs like New York, Milan, London, and Paris to learn about up-and-coming trends in the fashion community.

  Workplaces, Employers and Industries
  • Fashion and wardrobe consultants work for department stores, retail chains, and image consulting agencies. They also go into business for themselves. The job involves a lot of shopping, analyzing clients' closets, and meeting with the clients to discuss lifestyle, habits, taste, and style. Those who work outside of a store have more freedom to enter the homes of their clients, and get to shop at a variety of stores. They don't spend much time at a desk, unless they're making phone calls or taking care of administrative duties. Fashion and wardrobe consultants are often at work in the evenings or on weekends, when clients are up for shopping.

  Long Term Career Potential
Fashion and wardrobe consultants can open their own businesses, or become personal consultants for powerful clients. They can become color consultants, motivational speakers, cosmeticians, or get into fashion design. They can also branch out into event planning, and host fashion shows.

  Educational Paths
There are no set programs for fashion consulting offered at colleges or universities, but the college diploma program in fashion merchandising comes close. As well, some fashion and wardrobe consultants study home economics, psychology, sociology, fashion design, business management, public speaking, or art. There are also courses available in modeling, which cover topics like poise, etiquette, makeup application and, of course, fashion.
