Animal Care Worker

Description

Cats, dogs, rabbits, budgies, hamsters and ferrets are just a few of the many animals that an animal care worker will look after. Animal care workers take care of animals in many capacities. They will feed and water animals, clean cages and tanks and perform any other necessary clean up. They may also perform grooming such as washing fur, trimming nails and first aid such as attending to minor cuts. Depending on the place of employment and the animal involved, animal care workers may also play with the animals and take them for walks or exercise.

Animal care workers will have to work with all kinds of animals so they should be comfortable with everything from reptiles to horses. The animals they do come into contact with will depend where the worker is employed. Animal care workers employed in pet shops and kennels work with all sorts of small animals such as birds and fish while those working in stables deal mostly with horses and those who work at zoos may work with virtually any animal from koalas to pythons.

Each of these animals requires specialized care so animal care workers must be well informed in the care of animals and the prevention of illness. Most animal care workers specialize with the animals they work with. For example, those who work in a pet store might measure water quality and pH level in fish tanks, while those working in stables might muck out stalls and clean the horses' hooves.

Regardless of their place of employment, animal care workers must be knowledgeable in the care and prevention of illness in animals they work with and they must be caring and have a love of animals. It is also essential that they are not afraid to get dirty and they are able to tolerate unpleasant parts of the job such as dealing with animal waste.
