Aggregate Plant Operator

Description

Our industrialized world is full of highways and high rises, structures and roadways. We tend to take all of these things for granted without even knowing how they are made or what they are made of. The building blocks of these roadways and structures begin with workers such as aggregate plant operators. These workers are responsible for making the aggregates that are a main ingredient in asphalt and concrete. Aggregates are used in the construction of highways and bridges, as well as residential and industrial buildings.

First of all coveralls, eye and ear protection, hard hats, and steel-toed boots are the uniform of an aggregate plant worker. Workers operate, inspect, and perform minor repairs on plant structural, mechanical, or electrical components and/or related systems. Aggregate plant operators work independently and are completely responsible for their machines. Therefore, they must have a solid foundation of skills in mechanic, electrical and structural repairs necessary to keep their plants operating safely and at full capacity.

Most workers work 35 to 40 hours per week. Some processing plants operate on shifts, and workers will have to work nights, days or weekends. These workers are employed in various processing plants where it can be noisy, dirty, dusty, and hot. Aggregate plants can be dangerous places to work and workers must be prepared to work in sometimes extreme temperatures.
