College and Vocational Instructor

Description

In North America today, many employers are looking for applicants who have some education after high school. Colleges offer one-to-three year programs in practical training and instruction--it's often applicants who have attended one of these schools who are selected for new positions with employers.

College and vocational instructors are the teachers of these important programs. These instructors teach in a variety of subject matter, including community and health services, business and computers, performing arts, trades, dental hygiene, welding, law, security, cooking, literacy, film studies and mechanics, to name but a few. Their students are newly graduated from high school, adults looking for a change of career, or are graduates from a university program looking for some practical skills.

College and vocational instructors are experts in their subjects. Sometimes, they are practicing writers, artists, mechanics or chefs, who have decided to teach their skills to others as a career change. Others are graduates of university programs who are interested in a more hands-on kind of learning environment than they would find at a university. Regardless of their training and experience, they all have the same goals when it comes to their jobs--they want to help students become successful, well-trained experts in their chosen field. They supply students with knowledge and skills that they wouldn't be able to get from anywhere other than their college instructor's classroom, workshop or lab.
