Reflexology is a specialized type of massage. Reflexologists gently put pressure on their clients' reflex points, found in their feet, hands or ears. This practice relieves stress, enhances the body's natural healing mechanisms, and balances body functions.

The therapy developed out of the idea that our glands and organs have corresponding reflex areas on our feet, hands, or ears. Therefore, by properly applying pressure to these areas, a reflexologist can have a positive influence on the glands and organs on the inside.

Reflexologists do not diagnose, prescribe, or treat a specific illness. Instead of dealing with a specific illness, they attempt to induce deep relaxation in their clients, resulting in less stress, pain, improve circulation, better nerve functioning, and increasing the clients' energy levels. This will ideally allow the body to begin healing itself.

Reflexology is an effective therapy on its own, and many reflexologists work on their own, in independent clinics. In this capacity, a reflexologist is required to work not only with clients, but also with other staff, accountants, and record bookings and client information.

  Interests and Skills
An effective reflexologist will enjoy helping people and is comfortable working with them. They must always be gentle, tolerant and caring. Organization, an interest in science and anatomy, and positive feelings about other peoples' feet are crucial to this position. Because these therapists often interact with other health care practitioners, a professional outlook is important. For those who choose self-employment, good business sense is crucial. Most importantly, a reflexologist must be interested in alternate forms of health care, and be genuinely concerned with the welfare and well-being of their clients.

  Typical Tasks
  • Work closely with many different body parts from tongues to feet
  • Maintain a respectful, gentle manner for hours at a time
  • Interact with many different types of people, including the infirm
  • Be able to articulate reflexology's history and philosophies
  • Asses and react to the individual needs of patients
  • Oversee staff, complete bookkeeping, and recruit clients
  • An effective reflexologist will enjoy helping people and is comfortable working with them. A typical day might see many different clients with a number of different types of issues and concerns. Work in a hospital would be very different from a private practice, which itself might vary, depending on whether the reflexologist works in an office our out of their own home. Depending on the workplace, a reflexologist may have to be on call, or work evenings and weekends.

  Workplaces, Employers and Industries
  • Some reflexologists are self-employed, either in a private office, or as a practitioner working in the homes of the clients. Some work in clinics, or are employed by health spas, health stores, resorts or hotels. Because the therapy can be used alone or alongside other healing techniques, a reflexologist may choose to work in a clinic with many different types of alternate health care practitioners on staff.

  Long Term Career Potential
If you become a reflexologist, you can use it as a starting point for other careers. You could go on to teach reflexology, for example, or maybe write books and articles on the subject. Or you can look into related fields such as massage therapy, acupressure or acupuncture. As well, you can always improve on the skill you have--advanced training and continuing education programs are offered for those wishing to further their career in reflexology.
