Career Counselor |
Description Nobody likes looking for work. It makes you tired. It makes your feet hurt. The inevitable rejections make you feel like crawling under your covers and not emerging until you win the lottery and never have to hunt for work again. Yet there are people whose work consists of nothing but job hunting. Career counselors don't look for work for themselves, however. They spend all day, everyday, making other people's job searches a little less painful. They do this in a number of ways. They take career assessments of clients, trying to find out about employment and educational history, and what work environment they might be interested in. A client doesn't know? Career counselors can run tests, ask the right questions and help them discover what kind of work will fulfill them emotionally as well as financially. They help people pick career paths which will enable them to balance work, family and fun. Career counselors can also help them pick educational paths and training programs which will help them get the jobs they want. Career counselors can help clients write resumes, practice their interviewing skills and use the Internet for job searches. Their offices often have fax machines, phones, computers, and photocopiers available for job seekers to use. They also run workshops and support groups for people who are looking for work. Sometimes, employed people are dissatisfied with their jobs. They may contact a career counselor, who will act as an agent on behalf of their dissatisfied client, searching the job market, looking for possible companies and organizations with job openings which fit their client's needs. Large companies might also employ a career counselor. Known as "headhunters", these career counselors look out for possible workers who might be a great fit for the company. Regardless of whether or not the career counselor is helping runaway street youth find their first entry level job, or is working for a major computer company setting up executives across Europe, their job is essentially the same. They work cooperatively within the community (be that local convenience stores or offices in Paris), contacting employers, business owners, career-planning agencies, and schools, looking for work and workers, trying to fit the right person with the right job. |
