Program Overview
Monmouth University is one of a few universities in the United States offering an undergraduate program in Software Engineering. Graduates earn a Bachelor's of Science degree in Software Engineering (BSSE) that is unique in combining the study of computer science, software engineering, mathematics and physical science with humanities to provide students with a well-rounded education.
The university has seen increased demand for highly skilled software professionals for companies ranging in description, location and size such as automobile manufacturers, defense contractors, financial institutions, e-commerce, and the news and entertainment programming sector. Software engineers are in high demand for a growing market and are generously paid. The market is currently experiencing a critical shortage of highly skilled, qualified, and talented software engineers.
The program is designed to be comprehensive and rigorous and is taught by qualified faculty without the help of teaching assistants in the classroom or labs. All class sizes are small and the program benefits from the university's close proximity to leading high technology firms as well as the multi-media industry of New York City.
Basic principles of engineering and computer science are taught to provide students with the skills to be successful in the professional work force. Students are also taught to work together as members of a team, whether it is large or small.
A broader perspective is given to students with courses in liberal arts, culture and humanities. These courses provide students with the ability to think critically and analytically and broaden the imagination for a more well-rounded education.
Students are exposed to a problem solving approach and are given an understanding of business needs, an ability to synthesize a variety of potential solutions, evaluate those alternatives, and implement the best alternative to bring success to the company they are working for.
Courses taken include: computer programming; English; western civilization; requirements engineering; software verification and validation; software project management; calculus; geometry; physics; microeconomics, probability and statistics; human-computer interaction; ethics and professionalism; and electives as chosen by the student.
Graduates enter the workplace or attend graduate school well prepared with the BSSE from Monmouth University.
