Program Overview
|
The Department of Engineering at RMU engages students in experiential hands-on engineering education with advanced laboratories and industrial internships. Covering four engineering fields, this hands-on education leads to a BS degree in Manufacturing Engineering and a BS in Engineering, with tracks in Industrial, Mechanical and Software Engineering. All of these engineering programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and students enter the work force or graduate school immediately upon graduation.
Through RMU's integrated curricula, students learn to solve engineering problems in their major field. The RMU engineering experience, furthermore, develops skills and understanding beyond technology. Each engineering graduate succeeds in the completion of RMU's award winning communication skills program, achievement of proficiency in core business subject areas, and exploration of a range of general education courses. Every RMU undergraduate student is assigned an academic advisor and a counselor in the Center for Student Success. The academic advisor guides students through the program and helps them assess their educational and career goals. The counselor helps students navigate through college life and evaluate employment opportunities.
RMU's engineering programs are highlighted by real world applications, the academic internship program (or co-op program in Manufacturing Engineering), senior design projects, and weekly engaging laboratory sessions for each engineering course. Many students successfully play their favorite sports through a vibrant athletics program that benefits from the University's Neville Island Sports Center, the Pittsburgh region's premier sports and recreation center. Students can also volunteer their time, talent, and energy to various community service needs as well as initiatives, participate in student chapters of professional organizations and take part in extramural competitions. This year, a team of students has been designing and building an innovative off-road vehicle that will be entered in a competition sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers.
The typical class size at Robert Morris University is 23 with a student-to-faculty ratio of 18:1. Within the Department of Engineering, these numbers are even smaller, allowing the faculty to interact directly with each student, know all students by name, and dedicate additional time and attention as necessary to ensure student success. Full time faculty members, not graduate teaching assistants, teach all the engineering classes. Owing to their industry experience and/or distinguished research accomplishments, RMU's faculty enliven students' learning experience with real-world examples, problems, and projects.

Buildings and Facilities
|
All the engineering students at RMU directly benefit from the $6-million investment in new classrooms, laboratories and instructional technology that has transformed RMU's John Jay Center into a state-of-the-art engineering, science and mathematics facility. Students enjoy full access to all of the school laboratory facilities and also frequently meet with the engineering, mathematics, and science faculty, who are all located in the same building.
The beating heart of RMU's engineering programs is The Learning Factory, where students learn the latest engineering methods and processes, starting in the freshman year of their education. The industrial-grade facility features equipment for automatic identification, CNC machining and turning, controls, injection molding, machine tool monitoring, machine vision, materials testing, metallography, metrology, packaging, powder metallurgy, rapid prototyping, reverse engineering and robotics. It is in this facility that students gain hands-on experience with the use of this equipment in design, testing as well as manufacturing processes and take a product from concept to reality via cutting-edge technology. In addition to the hardware, students also employ a suite of supporting software packages for a variety of engineering operations, including design, analysis, manufacturing, simulation, offline programming, controls, monitoring, integration, software development, and enterprise resource management.
