Program Overview
The Department of Computer Science at Loyola College offers a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) and a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science (BACS). The BSCS offers concentrations in network and software engineering, while the BACS offers a flexible program of study that more easily allows for a minor in another discipline. The Computer Science Department at Loyola provides a solid foundation in computing principles as well as experience with state-of-the-art hardware and software systems. Graduates of the programs are well-placed in business, government and graduate schools. The Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area has a substantial number of technology companies and government agencies, so Loyola students can easily find a local internship during their college years and employment afterwards.

The Department of Engineering Science at Loyola College offers an accredited (ABET) Bachelor of Science and Engineering Science (BSES). The BSES program has been developed to meet the need for engineers who are fully trained in liberal studies, sciences, and math. The curriculum develops the methodologies of problem solving which are common to all engineering disciplines, emphasizing the fundamentals of engineering, mathematics and physics. Advanced training is provided in computer engineering, electrical engineering, materials engineering, and mechanical engineering.

Students at Loyola College in Maryland enjoy a great deal of student-faculty interaction. All courses, including laboratory courses, are taught by faculty and have small student to faculty ratios (5-12:1). Research opportunities are available for undergraduates and students often collaborate on papers and participate in symposium lectures. Students who wish to pursue research in the summer months in collaboration with a faculty member are eligible for stipends through the Hauber Summer Research Fellowship Program. Recent research projects in the Department of Engineering Science have included crystal plasticity studies, the production of shape memory alloys, distributed computation for microbioreactors, and robotics. In the Department of Computer Science, recent research projects have included computing optimal strategies for intelligent computer game agents, detecting and tracking humans with advanced laser sensors for safe robot navigation, analyzing satellite image analysis for NASA, creating fake Honeypot networks to collect data on computer hackers, and designing machine learning systems to analyze conversation patterns in large bodies of emails.

University and Location
Loyola College in Maryland is a private Jesuit college that prepares its students for success through a well-rounded liberal arts curriculum. Founded in 1852 in downtown Baltimore, the campus relocated to the Evergreen estate in a residential area of northern Baltimore in 1922. Loyola operates a Clinical Center at Belvedere Square in Baltimore and has two outstanding graduate centers in Timonium, Maryland and Columbia, Maryland. The 115,000 sq.ft. Fitness and Aquatic Center at Loyola College includes a 30 ft. climbing wall, swimming pool and multi-court gymnasium.

Loyola is a medium-sized college, with 6,100 undergraduate and graduate students. Modern facilities, a wide variety of majors and academic programs, and an excellent array of extracurricular activities, clubs and organizations are all offered within an inviting, accessible campus community that encourages student involvement and interaction with faculty. Faculty members play an active role in student life at Loyola College, fostering social and academic development both in and out of the classroom.
Admissions
Admission to Loyola College is based primarily on academic performance in grades 9-12 and on the SAT-I (Reading/Math) or ACT. The general guidelines are of B grades or higher in all academic courses and of the top 25% in class rank (if applicable). In 2007 the middle 50% of enrolling students at Loyola College scored between 1130 and 1290 on the SAT-I. There are no strict cutoffs and factors such as course selection/difficulty, all letters of recommendation and extracurricular activities are given consideration.

International students are required to submit the International Student Supplement. International applicants requiring the I-20 form for the student visa must submit a letter of financial support and a written verification of funds from a bank or financial institution. A written statement of intended summer plans, an enrollment deposit of one semester's tuition and fees (upon formal acceptance) and a SEVIS processing fee paid directly to the Department of Homeland Security are also required.

Applicants submitting transcripts from secondary or post-secondary institutions outside of the US must provide Loyola with a credential evaluation performed by World Educational Services (WES) and based on official transcripts and official results from state and national examinations.

International students from non-English speaking countries must submit TOEFL results. Required minimums are 550 (paper-based test), 213 (computer-adapted test) or 79 (Internet-based test).
Support for International Students
The Undergraduate Admissions Office assists international students in submitting international transcripts and other credentials, securing translation services and meeting visa documentation requirements.

The Center for Academic Services and Support provides on-going advising and tutoring programs and resources for all students. Once at Loyola, international students are encouraged to access these services whenever needed to meet the challenges of college study.

Buildings and Facilities
Computer Science students begin programming in instructor-led closed labs with a windows-based integrated development environment. In upper level classes and research they move to high-end Linux workstations that are typical in computer science research in graduate schools and government labs. The department also has a multimedia facility for digital video, a robotics lab with advanced laser scanners and professional grade mobile robots, and a network lab for work on computer security and fast distributed processing. The introductory lab, Linux lab, special projects lab and hardware labs are all available around the clock for computer science students.

The Engineering Department at Loyola is housed on two floors of the largest academic building on campus, the Knott/Donnelly Science Complex. Engineering students use modern and well-equipped laboratories including the Electronics Laboratory, Computer Laboratory, Signal Processing & Communications Laboratory, and several Materials, Mechanics and Metallurgy Laboratories. An engineering student lounge and design project area facilitates discussion and cooperation between engineering students. Engineering Science is the recipient of the Hewlett-Packard Teaching grant for 2008 that has provided classroom, tablet PCs for interactive teaching.
