Program Overview
|
At Penn State Harrisburg, the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology (SSET) offers undergraduate programs leading to Bachelor of Science degrees in Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Environmental Engineering, Mathematical Sciences or Mathematical Sciences with the Secondary Education option, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Science, and Structural Design and Construction Engineering Technology. All of the engineering and engineering technology programs are accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Because many of the programs are hands-on in nature, the majority of the faculty is required to have extensive industrial experience as well as to exhibit first-rate teaching and research qualities. In addition to its excellent faculty and small classes, opportunities for students to work with faculty on projects and strong employment prospects for the graduates are other strengths the programs offer.
SSET pursues and supports research, development, and scholarly activities for faculty and students through traditional and innovative means as well as through cooperative relationships with regional industries, state government agencies and professional communities. The School teaches students to think critically, communicate effectively, and act responsibly within a context of personal and professional ethics. Programs in SSET value individual creativity and intellectual distinction, while providing an education that is grounded in fundamentals, communication skills, and teamwork. Students are prepared for quality professional practice, decision making, leadership, and advanced studies.

Admissions
|
Penn State requires proof of graduation or a GED for admission to four-year degree programs.
For first year students, Pennsylvania State University does not have a minimum GPA or standardized test score used for admission: they consider a combination of the applicants GPA and standardized test scores, as well as a few other factors.
The high school grade-point average (GPA) accounts for approximately two-thirds of the decision. The remaining one-third is based on other factors, which may include standardized test scores, class rank, personal statement and activities list.
Applicants may want to consult Penn State's chart of the mid-50% range of the students we accepted last year to get an estimate of your eligibility if you're a first-year student.
Transfer students (students who have completed more than 18 college credist) are required to have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale.
International Applicants
Academic Records
All documents should be submitted in the original language. All documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by a certified line-by-line, literal English translation.
All documents submitted for review must be official, that is, they must be either originals or copies certified by authorized persons. A "certified" copy is one that bears an original signature of the registrar or other designated school official, an original impression of the institution’s seal, or signature/seal of the examining board. Uncertified or notarized copies are not acceptable.
Secondary School Records
Secondary records are required for both first-year and transfer applicants. Transcripts of course work and grades are required for four years of secondary school study. Records should list subjects studied each year and the mark or grade of proficiency earned in each. A key to the marking system with minimum passing mark should also be included. If you complete secondary school in a country where a secondary school leaving examination (GCE, GCSE, CXC, French Baccalaureate, Abitur, etc.) is administered, you will be required to provide the results of the examination.
The SAT or ACT is required if an applicants native language is English, or if the applicant is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
International Students whose native language is not English must submit proof of English language proficiency. The following are ways in which an applicant can submit this proof:
1. A minimum TOEFL score of 80 on the Internet-based TOEFL, 213 on the computer-based exam, or 550 on the paper exam (score reports must be official and cannot be more than two years old)
2. A minimum IELTS score of 6.5 on the academic test
3. SAT score of 530 or higher on the critical reading or writing section
4. IGCSE score of A, B, or C on the English language exam
5. IB score of 5 or higher on the English language exam.
Applicants who have been in a U.S. college or university and have completed two years of full-time academic course work and have a grade of C (2.0) or higher in a standard English composition course will also meet the language proficiency requirement.

Support for International Students
|
Penn State Harrisburg is home to more than 80 international students from 25 different countries. Because of the small campus atmosphere, students have a wonderful opportunity to develop close relationships with other students, faculty and staff members.
The Office of International Student Support (OISS) houses the International Student Adviser and provides support services for international students in matters relating to USCIS paperwork as well as social and cultural issues. Requests for program extensions, travel documents, and work permissions are processed through the Office. OISS also provides students with referrals to professionals in financial, legal and other concerns.

Buildings and Facilities
|
Penn State Harrisburg has undertaken major construction projects on campus in recent years to accommodate new and existing programs. Beginning with the expansion of the Science and Technology Building to complement study in Environmental Engineering and Environmental Pollution Control, the college has added a state-of-the-art, 115,000-square-foot library, new apartment-style housing for 330 students, an expanded food court and Town Square for student activities, an indoor aquatics center, a tennis complex, and several sports fields. Students in SSET programs also benefit from the numerous research centers and institutes affiliated with Penn State.
Internet access for students is available at ITS Student Computing Labs, residence halls, Penn State offices, many classrooms, and off-campus locations. Wireless access is also available throughout the campus.
