Program Overview
|
The Erik Jonsson School of Engineering & Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) offers undergraduate degrees in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering and Telecommunications Engineering. The school also provides a "Fast Track" BS/MS program option, which allows students to earn both a bachelor's and a master's degree in five years of full-time study. All programs are designed to prepare students for professional practice or graduate studies. Curricula emphasize electronic information processing and technologies involved in acquiring, interpreting, transmitting and using information. All classes are taught by faculty members who hold doctoral or terminal degrees.
The Jonsson School is consistently ranked 1st or 2nd in graduating the largest number of Computer Science majors in the state of Texas. The School also has the largest Engineering and Computer Science co-op and internship program in the state. Although voluntary, this program is among the largest in the nation. This tremendous success is due in part to the fact that the campus is located in the second largest high-tech region in the United States.
The Computer Science program emphasizes the design and analysis of efficient parallel and sequential algorithms with applications in VLSI layout and routing, distributed networks and operating systems, image processing, information assurance, graphics design, computational geography, automation and robotics and program testing and validation. Students in the program learn to analyze and solve complex problems, and design new uses of technology to serve an ever-changing society. The core program includes operating systems, computer architecture, programming languages, data structures and automata theory.
The Electrical Engineering program offers a solid foundation in fundamental areas of electrical networks, electronic devices and circuits, electromagnetics, computers, digital systems and communications. Students can select from a broad choice of electives and advanced courses in computer hardware & software, analog & digital communication systems, analog & signal processing, guided & unguided wave propagation, integrated circuits, and microelectronics.
The Mechanical Engineering program started in Fall 2008 and aims to produce graduates who will be capable of undertaking challenging projects requiring knowledge of the fundamentals of the design of mechanical and thermal systems. It emphasizes skills that will be essential for the 21st century mechanical engineer like micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), robotics, micro-thermodynamics, micro-fluidics.
UTD offers interdisciplinary degree programs in computer and telecommunications engineering, combining components of both computer science and electrical engineering and additional topics in Embedded Systems, communication network design techniques and methodologies, wireless communications, and signal switching and transmission.
The Jonsson School also offers a degree program in Software Engineering. This program focuses on how to develop software efficiently and how to use software to solve design problems. Focus is also placed on quality assurance, reliability and project management.
The Jonsson School continues to grow to meet the high demand for technology education. UTD has recently been identified as a National Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance by the US Department of Homeland Security, and offers several courses in this area. A new Department of Materials Science and Engineering is being introduced, and plans call for the addition of departments of mechanical engineering and bioengineering.
UTD is situated amid a high concentration of companies that specialize in nano and microelectronics, telecommunications, IT services, computer gaming, signal processing and optics. Over 800 technology companies are within a five-mile radius of the Jonsson School and act as active research partners. The school's current research expenditures top $27 million a year.

The University of Texas at Dallas was founded in 1969 to teach upper-level and graduate studies and in 1989 expanded to include undergraduate programs. The university now has seven schools and over 14,000 students. All degree programs include classes that are available at night. The average UTD student is a single, 19-year-old. University housing consists of attractive apartment complexes with private recreational facilities. The Activities Center includes several athletics courts, a 25-meter pool, indoor and outdoor soccer facilities and a baseball field. UTD offers its students well-organized athletics programs, from basketball to cross-country. Students also have access to a variety of cultural, social and recreational activities. More than 135 organizations, fraternities, sororities and clubs, including many student-engineering chapters, operate on campus.
Located in Richardson, Texas, a suburb about 19 miles north of downtown Dallas, the campus is surrounded by industry and residential neighborhoods. Dallas is a city of 2.8 million residents and offers enriching cultural, social and recreational opportunities.

Admissions
|
UTD is unique in that it is a very selective university that does not have minimum GPA or standardized test score requirements. There are two methods by which a student can be admitted to UTD. The first is for Texas residents only and is based on high school class rank. Automatic admission is granted to Texas resident students who graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class and show successful completion of required high school courses. Note that the necessary documents (application and transcripts and fee) must be submitted to the University for verification.
The second is to have the application packet reviewed by an Admissions Committee, which is comprised of University administrators. Admission is determined by parameters such as an applicant's high school class rank, high school curriculum and SAT (or ACT) score. Other factors, including the narrative essay, can play a large role in whether or not a student is admitted.
Engineering students should have at least one-half year in trigonometry and at least one year in elementary, intermediate & advanced algebra, plane geometry, chemistry and physics. The School prefers the student to have completed at least pre-calculus. Advanced Placement (AP) credits are also recognized and increase the strength of an application. Students can apply online or request an admissions package in writing or by email.
International applicants are held to the same admissions standards as domestic students and must satisfy the above requirements. Additionally, international students must show proof of financial support.

Buildings and Facilities
|
The Jonsson School is located in a 300,000 square-foot complex consisting of two three-story buildings. The complex features the latest in engineering facilities and equipment, including wireless access in both buildings.
The North Building features 24 research labs and eight centers of excellence. The South Building features a 140-terminal open computer lab, three large auditoriums, a Student Services Center and 47 research labs with over 1,000 new computers distributed among them. Classrooms and faculty offices can be found in both buildings. In addition, the new $85 million Natural Science and Engineering Research Laboratory building for interdisciplinary research opened in December 2006.
Scholarships
The Academic Excellence Scholarship Program is the University's flagship scholarship program. All freshmen admitted to the University for the fall semester are automatically considered for an Academic Excellence Scholarship Award. (A scholarship application is not required.) Important factors in the selection of scholarship recipients include SAT or ACT scores, class rank, grade point average, and success in Honors or Advanced Placement course work. In addition, positive weight may be given to the following factors: achievements in work experience, community service, extracurricular activities (leadership), surmounting obstacles to the further pursuit of higher education, socioeconomic background, and status as a first-generation college student.
Recipients of an Academic Excellence Scholarship may supplement their awards with need-based state or federal aid and/or third-party scholarships. Please refer to the Financial Aid web site for further information at http://financial-aid.utdallas.edu/.
