Program Overview
|
The Department of Engineering at Norfolk State University (NSU) was established in 2002 with the intent of becoming a "powerhouse" among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) in science and technology. The Department of Engineering is housed within the School of Science & Technology, and offers Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Electronics Engineering and Optical Engineering. The B.S. in Electronics Engineering offers curricular emphases in microelectronics, system science and controls, and digital and analog electronic networks. The B.S. in Optical Engineering offers curricular emphases in optical materials, photonics, optoelectronics, and optical communications. In order to expand students' knowledge beyond the classroom, students are encouraged to participate in internships in industry, national laboratories, and partnering universities including the opportunity to work abroad.
The mission of the NSU Department of Engineering is to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for successful professional careers in engineering; to encourage innovation, creativity, and an entrepreneurial spirit; to instill a sense of community responsibility; and to develop leaders for a technology-driven global society.
Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering The Electronics Engineering curriculum gives students a thorough knowledge in the methods of design, application, and analysis of electronic systems. The Electronics Engineering program educational objectives are to provide a state-of-the art electronics engineering education capable of producing engineers that can:
• apply knowledge in science and engineering disciplines to make sound scientific decisions and devise innovative solutions to contemporary issues
• clearly communicate their ideas to the technical community and to broader audiences
• function successfully in multidisciplinary and diverse professional environments
• be successful in leadership and in team-oriented settings
• be ethically responsible and cognizant of societal implications of their actions
• continue their education in graduate school programs and pursue life-long learning
Bachelor of Science in Optical Engineering The Bachelor of Science in Optical Engineering program is one of just a few in the country; it is the only program in Optical Engineering on an HBCU campus. The Optical Engineering program was established to meet the future needs of government and industry research, and features strengths in optical materials, photonics, optoelectronics, and optical communications. A five-year B.S./M.S. in Optical Engineering is available. The Optical Engineering faculty has committed to program educational objectives that will produce graduates who:
• are competitive in the market place and prepared to continue their education beyond the undergraduate level
• have the knowledge and skills to achieve leadership positions in a technological and global society
• exhibit strong analytical and engineering design skills
• possess effective team skills and a team-oriented perspective
• demonstrate strong communication skills in technical and public arenas
• have a strong sense of professional and ethical responsibility
• have respect for and appreciation of diversity with a global perspective.

University and Location
|
Norfolk State University (NSU) was founded in 1935 as Norfolk State College, and was granted university status in 1979. Today, the university is proud to be one of the largest predominantly black institutions in the nation, and continues to serve the people of the Hampton Roads region. NSU is a public, state-supported institution in Norfolk, Virginia, which is the cultural, educational, business and medical center of Hampton Roads, and one of Virginia's largest cities. The university is organized into five schools: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Science & Technology, and Social Work. The School of Science & Technology has over 1,700 students and presently comprises 28 percent of the university's total student enrollment. Undergraduate students can select from courses in nine academic departments: allied health, biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, nursing, physics and technology. Graduate programs in the School include the M.S. degree in electronics engineering; optical engineering; computer science; and materials science. A Ph.D. in materials science and engineering is offered through an interdisciplinary approach of the departments of chemistry, engineering, and physics and the University's Center for Materials Research.

Buildings and Facilities
|
The Department of Engineering enjoys a newly renovated home at the Robinson Technology Center building, and the department also enjoys a close affiliation with the Marie V. McDemmond Center for Applied Research. The McDemmond Center is the first building of the planned multi-building Research Innovations to Support Empowerment (RISE) campus that will facilitate innovation through effective government–industry–university–partnerships. The McDemmond Center is six stories with a 128,000 square foot plan and houses a 6,000 square foot modern Class 100/1000 clean room facility. The McDemmond Center supports research in nanotechnology, sensors, photonics, advanced material science, massively networked systems, insulation evaluation in electrical power apparatus, gaming and simulation, and information assurance. The RISE Campus also hosts an ultrahigh bandwidth, redundant path, private SONET connection (RISE SuperNode) with reliable back–up power facilities. The newly renovated Robinson Technology Center building features all–new classroom facilities, including a high–tech electronic classroom and an undergraduate clean room micro–device fabrication laboratory. The Robinson Technology Center also features new laboratory facilities to support the undergraduate engineering programs.
