Program Overview
|
The Tagliatela College of Engineering at the University of New Haven (UNH) has been offering degrees in engineering since 1920. The College offers four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees in the following disciplines: chemical; civil; computer; electrical; mechanical engineering; systems; computer science, chemistry and information technology. A Bachelor of General Engineering degree, is also offered, which blends elements from each concentration to provide students with a broad general knowledge base. Students are encouraged either to participate in UNH's cooperative education program or to assist a faculty member in engineering research to gain hands-on experience in their fields of study prior to graduation.
The undergraduate engineering program curricula are based on a multidisciplinary approach and structured around design projects, engineering laboratories and computer use, and require between 130 and 136 credits for completion. The school's dedicated full-time faculty deliver BS programs in both full- and part-time formats, and allow students to change their concentration until their third semester of study without increasing the number of course requirements.
UNH's engineering faculty hold doctorate degrees from over 35 internationally recognized universities, and combine high-quality instruction with an emphasis on small class sizes to ensure that students receive personal attention and advising.
In 1997, the College of Engineering's electric vehicle, the ReCharger, won four awards at the Tour del Sol race that runs from Manhattan to Washington, DC. The project, submitted by mechanical engineering students at UNH, won Best Student Entry from the American Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Other recent mechanical engineering projects include the redesigning and replacement of the 100-year-old main drive and electrical system of New Haven's Lighthouse Point Park Carousel.
In 2003, The Tagliatela College of Engineering received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to implement the new multidisciplinary spiral curriculum. They were one of only 25 schools in the nation to receive this prestigious award.
In addition to a multidisciplinary foundation in technical subjects the new curriculum add an essential set of professional skills-project management, teamwork, and communications, to teach the business of engineering.

University and Location
|
The University of New Haven has offered students high-quality educational opportunities for over 75 years. Established in 1920 as the New Haven YMCA Junior College, the institution evolved into New Haven College and, in 1970, became recognized as a full university accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
UNH now houses five schools, and has developed a reputation for its highly specialized offerings, such as the CJ and FS program and the public safety program. Although most of the undergraduate courses are offered at UNH's main campus, some courses are offered at various off-campus sites, increasing UNH's overall impact on the state of Connecticut.
First-year students are required to live on the UNH campus and purchase the university meal plan unless they are residing with parents or their extended family. Suite-style residences are available for first-year students. Senior students live in residence halls that have partial kitchens. UNH maintains a listing of available off-campus housing. Students are responsible for all costs and obligations associated with rental of off-campus housing.
Located less than 5 kilometres from the downtown core of New Haven, UNH maintains strong links with the surrounding community. New Haven, Connecticut, is a small city on the northeast coast of the US. Local festivals, shopping, restaurants and cinemas offer widely-varied entertainment options. The peaceful, beautiful city of New Haven has efficient train and bus transportation systems, and is located only a short drive from the large urban centres of Boston, Hartford and New York City.

Admissions
|
Candidates applying to UNH must submit completed application forms, along with official transcripts of previous secondary or postsecondary studies. UNH cannot consider incomplete applications until all documentation is received. Students currently attending a secondary school are responsible for forwarding their final transcripts as soon as they become available. Official ACT or SAT scores must also be forwarded directly to the admissions office.
Students whose native language is not English must submit a minimum TOEFL score of 500. International students educated at institutions where English is the primary language of instruction may substitute their SAT or ACT scores in place of TOEFL results.
International students must include with their application evidence of financial support while studying at UNH. Connecticut state law also requires international students to provide proof to the university of immunizations for measles and rubella.
All students must submit completed dossiers with a nonrefundable US$50 application fee. A US$400 enrollment deposit and a US$225 acceptance fee is required upon admission to the program.

Support for International Students
|
UNH has a large and active international student body. The International Services Office employs staff who are specialists in processing immigration documentation, and offers free assistance in this area to international students. The office also assists students in adapting to university life and to American culture.
The Office of Intercultural Relations works with members of the university to develop curricula that encourage international students to participate in all aspects of university academics. The office is committed to providing academic, financial, and personal advice to all students, with a particular focus on minority students.
