Program Overview
|
The College of Technology at Ferris State University (FSU) offers over thirty degree programs in engineering, engineering technology, and technology. Each program emphasizes strong theoretical education reinforced through extensive laboratory practice, and industrial and professional exposure. A large selection of minor, certificate, and dual degree options are available to students. Many programs include paid internship experience. All programs demonstrate excellent graduate placement rates.
The College of Technology awards four-year Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees in 18 disciplines, 12 of which lead to engineering or engineering technology degrees, and one to an engineering degree. Two-year Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degrees are available in 15 disciplines. Students who complete an AAS degree have the option of transferring to the junior level of the BS degree programs. Most of the programs in the College are accredited by the appropriate agencies and are recognized as among the best programs in the country.
BS degrees can be obtained in: Automotive Engineering Technology, Automotive Management, Computer Networks & Systems, Construction Management, Electrical/ Electronics Engineering Technology, Facility Management, Heavy Equipment Service Engineering Technology, HVACR Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, New Media Printing and Publishing, Plastics Engineering Technology, Printing Management, Product Design Engineering Technology, Quality Engineering Technology, Rubber Engineering Technology, Surveying Engineering and Welding Engineering Technology.
AAS degrees can be obtained in: Architectural Technology, Automotive Service Technology, Building Construction Technology, CAD Drafting and Tool Design Technology, Civil Engineering Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology, HVACR Technology, Industrial Electronics Technology, Manufacturing Tooling Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Plastics Technology, Printing and Digital Graphic Imaging Technology, Rubber Technology, Surveying Technology and Welding Technology.
College of Technology students also enjoy opportunities to participate in several national competitions and one or more of the College's very active student societies and professional organizations. The College places strong emphasis on quality education. All courses are taught by faculty (not graduate assistants) and a low student to faculty ratio assures students ready access to faculty. Faculty is selected with strong consideration of technical experience as well as academic credentials.

University and Location
|
Ferris State University was founded in 1884 to provide forestry workers with education and training in other professions, and is today still dedicated to the goal of providing career-oriented education and training. FSU offers more than 170 educational programs through its Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Kendall College of Art and Design, Optometry, Pharmacy and Technology. These programs lead to bachelor's and associate degrees; master's degrees in accountancy, criminal justice administration, information systems management, and career and technical education; and doctorates in optometry and pharmacy.
More than 100 buildings, including 19 student residences, are situated on the FSU campus, which covers an area of approximately 600 acres.
FSU is located in Big Rapids, Michigan, 200 miles northwest of Detroit and 250 miles northeast of Chicago. Situated on the Muskegon River, the community lies in the heart of a region that is a popular destination for boaters, campers and cross-country skiers. The county contains 101 lakes and four parks, including the Manistee National Forest.

Admissions
|
Applicants may visit Ferris State University's website at www.ferris.edu and submit an online application at no charge. Students wishing to mail their applications must include a $30 processing fee.
International applicants must successfully complete the equivalent of US high school to be granted admission. All transcripts must be translated into English and certified as true, with an explanation of the grading system used and the grades earned by the applicant. Those who have completed any post-secondary education must forward their college or university transcripts to an evaluation agency before FSU can consider awarding transfer credit.
Applicants whose native language is not English must also submit TOEFL results or equivalent proof of English proficiency. The minimum accepted paper-based TOEFL score is 500 (pbt) or 173 (cbt). A grade of "B" or higher in English studies at the collegiate level is also acceptable proof of English fluency.
International applicants must supply proof of adequate financial resources and health insurance for the intended period of study. An insurance policy can be purchased through the university health center.

Support for International Students
|
Upon arrival at FSU, all international students meet with special advisors who ensure that all formalities of studying in the US are handled effectively, and who offer counsel related to cultural and personal concerns. Orientation activities include campus tours, academic advising and opportunities to meet faculty and students.
The Office of International Affairs (OIA) sponsors an international festival each April, giving international students the opportunity to introduce their country and culture to FSU students and the Big Rapids community by preparing an information display. The OIA organizes field trips to places such as Lake Michigan, Grand Rapids or Chicago.
International student potluck dinners usually take place each semester, and the International Student Organization aids international students year-round with their integration into the US and with maximizing their experience studying at FSU.

Buildings and Facilities
|
The COT has five technology buildings, including the Automotive Center, Construction Technology Center, Heavy Equipment Center, Swan Technical Center and National Elastomer Center for Plastics and Rubber Technology, which was created to fulfill a growing industrial need for plastics and rubber engineering technologists. The COT buildings contain a total of 600,000 square feet of laboratory space, where students can make use of professional-grade tools and facilities. These include CAD/CAM software and equipment, laser cutting and welding, a fully equipped model-making facility and comprehensive design testing lab.
The National Construction Technology and HVACR Center upgraded its facilities as of September 2003. The $18-million renovation includes 45,000 additional square feet of floor space. The new Ferris Library for Information, Technology and Education, completed in March 2001, houses 300 new desktop computers, live ports for laptops and a collection of 750,000 books and periodicals.
