Institute Overview
|
Drury University began as Drury College in 1873. It was designed by Congregational home missionaries who felt the need for an academically strong liberal arts college in the area. Classes began in 1873, mostly in education, religion and music, on a campus which occupied less than 1½ acres. Today, Drury sits on a 85-acre campus, which includes the original site, and offers more than 50 majors.
Drury College became Drury University on Jan. 1, 2000, reflecting its growing role in higher education. It was one of the first universities in the state to offer continuing education and evening classes to meet the needs of non-traditional students. Today the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies serves almost 4,000 students, in Springfield, online and at ten branch campuses located through Southern Missouri.

Program Delivery and Student Support
|
Students at Drury University take online classes through a virtual learning environment system known as Blackboard. Students who are unfamiliar with the system can take an online orientation on the Drury University website. The instruction using Blackboard is interactive, and students are required to participate and be "present" in class. This system allows students to attend online asynchronous lessons - so students can take classes at any time, providing that they attend weekly. A student indicates his or her "presence" in the virtual classroom through messages and discussion forums organized by the instructor.
Online students receive support much like "traditional" campus-based students. For technical support with Blackboard, students can contact the Online Education Office during regular business hours via e-mail. The Help Desk can be contacted via e-mail between 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturdays, and 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays for technical support. Students may leave a message during other hours. All requests after these hours will be processed the following day.
Technical requirements
Students need a computer that is capable of interacting in a Blackboard online class. Therefore students must have a word processing program that can save files in an html or webpage format (e.g.Microsoft Works, Microsoft Word or Word Perfect), and must have a computer that can connect to the Internet either through a dial-up modem or via cable/dsl access. It is also suggested that students use Internet Explorer or Firefox as a Web browser.
