Program Overview
|
The Virtual College coordinates all distance learning and off-campus credit and noncredit programs for Fort Hays State University (FHSU). Distance or virtual learning connects students and faculty remotely through interactive technologies, including the Internet, CD-ROM, DVD, videotape and, within Kansas, an Internet Protocol Television (IPTV). The university offers degree, nondegree and certificate programs for off-campus students. All colleges at FHSU cooperate with the Virtual College to extend the institution's academic resources to people all over the world.
Bachelor of General Studies
The Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) is completed entirely at a distance. The BGS offers customized programs and options in Child Development, General Business, Geographical Science, Health Promotion, Human Services, Gerontology, Information Networking and Telecommunications, Justice Studies, Music, Organizational Leadership, and Military Specialties. Degree requirements for the BGS total 124 credit hours. FHSU accepts up to 94 credit hours from any accredited institution and a maximum of 64 at the lower division. The university also accepts up to 64 credits from nontraditional sources like CLEP, ACE, DANTES or Excelsior exams. For additional information visit www.fhsu.edu/bgs.
Master of Liberal Studies
The Master of Liberal Studies (MLS) is an interdisciplinary graduate program available through the College of Arts and Sciences at FHSU. The program consists of a core requirement, a customized plan of study and a culminating experience for a total of 31 credit hours.
Admissions
Undergraduate
Students applying to FHSU for the first time must submit an application form along with a one-time $30 nonrefundable fee ($35 for international students) to the Office of the Registrar. All students must meet additional admission requirements found at www.fhsu.edu/admissions.
Graduate
Admission applications must include a formal application; $35 nonrefundable application fee; official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate coursework; letters of recommendation and a personal statement, if required. International students must meet additional requirements that can be found at www.fhsu.edu/international.

University Overview
|
Founded in 1902 near the site of a frontier military post, Fort Hays State University (FHSU) has developed academic research and community partnerships with the people of the region and State of Kansas. FHSU serves over 9,500 students, including over 5,500 distance education students around the world. The university features a 17-to-1 student-faculty ratio and is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Its Virtual College ranks as one of the most progressive programs in the United States.
The main FHSU campus occupies 200 of 4,160 acres owned by the State of Kansas and deeded to the university. The campus includes more than 40 limestone-faced buildings.
Hays, Kansas, is located about halfway between Denver and Kansas City. With a population of approximately 20,000 people, Hays is the medical, cultural, educational and industrial center of Northwest Kansas.

Program Delivery and Student Support
|
The Virtual College delivers courses face-to-face at FHSU or remote sites, IPTV (Internet Protocol Television), videotape, Internet-based instruction, CD-ROM, DVD and a combination of technologies.
Minimum computer requirements include: a Windows-500 MHz Pentium Processor, Macintosh G3 or G4; 128 MB of RAM; 150 MB of free hard drive space; a soundcard and speakers; 8X CD-ROM drive; 56K or faster modem and 800 X 600 resolution Internet access. The recommended operating systems should be Microsoft Windows XP, or higher, or Mac OS X, or higher; a web browser such as Netscape 4.7 or Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0, or later; and an email account and reliable access to the Internet through an ISP.
Student advising, online tutoring, and academic and technical support are available to all FHSU students.
