Program Overview
For over 75 years, the University of Tennessee (UT) has been extending continuing education services and programming resources through a department designed specifically to address the lifelong learning needs of its students. This division has evolved over time, but its mission has remained constant – to provide educational opportunities to non-traditional students.

With breakthroughs in communication technologies, UT is pushing the boundaries of distance, time and accessibility to reach out to students wherever they are. Through programs offered in a variety of modes, continuing education helps people of all ages achieve degrees and certificates, accomplish professional development goals, and pursue recreational and intellectual interests.

Distance Education and Independent Study, in conjunction with academic colleges and departments, coordinates educational opportunities designed primarily for working professionals unable to attend classes on the Knoxville campus. Online, CD-ROM and correspondence offerings allow students to earn college (graduate and undergraduate) and professional development credits, satisfy continuing education requirements, and work toward degrees.

The constraints of a traditional university program, frequent travel away from home and work, and difficulty accessing resources has made the quest for additional professional skills or an advanced degree a frustrating endeavor. With UT's Live Online classes, these barriers no longer exist. Courses offered by the university's Live Online Delivery System shatter old boundaries with breakthrough technology solutions designed to keep students near their families and careers while acquiring new professional skills.

Internet classes use audio and shared computer screens that put students online with faculty and classmates nationwide, and offer a level of convenience unmatched in any other degree program.

Live Online classes are real-time so students see and hear everything as it happens. This Internet-based interactive media also features online notes, quizzes and discussion boards accessible to students and faculty anytime. Audio/video playbacks or recordings of previous class sessions are available over the Internet during the semester.
