Program Overview
|
The Independent Study (IS) office at Oklahoma State University (OSU) has been in operation for over 80 years - helping non-traditional students advance their education while continuing to meet the rigorous demands of their daily lives. The program offers over 100 courses that are developed by OSU faculty in the academic colleges. OSU is the state's land grant institution
and is fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and programs within the colleges are also accredited. IS is part of International Education and Outreach at OSU.
Independent Study courses are divided into two categories: yearlong independent study and semester-based independent study. Admission to the university is not required to enroll in yearlong IS courses. Courses can start at any time and students are given 12 months to complete the course. Books, materials, assignments and exams are coordinated through the IS Office. Academic credit at OSU will be awarded upon completion of the course. Up to one-fourth of the required credits for an OSU degree can come from yearlong IS courses. Students wishing to use OSU credits towards a degree at another institution should check with an adviser at that institution to determine applicability.
Students must be admitted to OSU to take semester-based IS courses. Courses must be completed within the semester and are treated the same as campus-based courses, except that books, materials, assignments and exams are coordinated through the IS Office. Students interested in taking IS semester-based courses should contact the IS Office directly to see what courses are currently available.
Courses completed through IS are assigned either OSU college credit or Continuing Education credit. Students can request the type of credit they want to earn but cannot earn both. To register for Independent Study courses, students may download the application from the website and either mail, fax, or call in their enrollment. Online enrollment will soon be available; students will find this option on the IS website.
