Program Overview
|
The Office of Continuing Education (OCE) at Illinois' (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) Division of Academic Outreach offers continuing education for students and working professionals. With a long list of undergraduate and graduate, programs and courses, as well as several noncredit offerings, Illinois has a growing national and international presence for high quality online programs. Areas of study include agriculture and natural resources, education, engineering and computer science, library and information science, labor and industrial relations, and social work, as well as in many general education disciplines in liberal arts and sciences.
Some courses are offered online, some in face-to-face classroom settings within and beyond the state of Illinois and others use tools that promote synchronous learning. Most of the courses are taught by tenure track faculty of University of Illinois who teach on the Urbana-Champaign campus.
Degree Programs:
Students must participate in synchronous online class sessions for many, albeit not all, of the degree programs offered, however, all coursework and additional communication is asynchronous. A number of programs are cohort based, so students progress through their respective programs with other students on the same schedule. Students may choose to complete the program at a slower pace if this is approved by the online programs coordinator or if they prefer a program offered by Illinois that is offered entirely in an asynchronous delivery format.
Guided Individual Study:
Self-paced, undergraduate courses are available through the Guided Individual Study (GIS) program. These courses are mostly online and students can take up to six months to complete each course.
GIS courses are offered in a variety of subject areas, including:
• Afro-American Studies
• Anthropology
• Art
• Asian Studies
• Business Administration
• Business and Technical Writing
• Classical Civilization
• Educational Psychology
• English
• French
• History
• Human Development and Family Studies
• Mathematics
• Physics
• Political Science
