Program Overview
|
The Williamson College of Business Administration (WCBA) provides students with a broad education and professional opportunities to succeed in college and in the business world. The teaching and learning process is student-centered, with a favorable faculty to student ratio and an emphasis on the application of theory to practice.
The WCBA offers associate, bachelor's and master's degrees and is primarily an undergraduate college with teaching as its main priority. The associate of arts (AA) in business administration is available with concentrations in accounting, finance, management and marketing, and articulates fully with the bachelor of science in business administration (BSBA). Students can also pursue an associate degree in labor studies and earn an ALS.
The BSBA is a four-year program leading to a baccalaureate degree from the Department of Accounting and Finance, Management or Marketing–the three departments that comprise the college. Students acquire the knowledge, skills and experiences to progress toward positions of increasing responsibility. Faculty emphasize the development of analytical, problem-solving and communications skills necessary for informed decision making.
Students can choose from 11 different majors in the BSBA program, which include accounting, advertising and public relations, business economics, finance, general administration, human resource management, international accounting and finance, international management, international marketing, management information systems and marketing management. Certificates are available in nonprofit leadership, entrepreneurship, and enterprise resource planning (ERP).
The Professional Practice Program offers internship and cooperative education courses for US and international students. The program links academic knowledge with experiences in the workplace. Students earn academic credit, and income to help finance their education, and make connections with potential future employers. The program can provide an opportunity for students to test their abilities, knowledge and interests, and give students with clear career goals a chance to obtain practical work experience.
A number of student chapters of national professional organizations, including the American Society for Quality, Beta Alpha Psi, Society for Human Resource Management, American Marketing Association and Institute of Management Accountants, are active on campus. These groups offer students the opportunity to develop leadership skills, network with current and future professionals, and acquire knowledge of the business world.

University and Location

Youngstown State University can trace its origins back to 1908 and the establishment of the School of Law of the Youngstown Association School, an evening school sponsored by the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA). The Department of Business Administration was founded in 1923 at Youngstown College and became the Warren P. Williamson Jr. College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University in 1983. The WCBA has graduated over 13,000 students since that time and is now home to the Williamson Center for International Business, Monus Entrepreneurship Center and Center for Nonprofit Leadership.
YSU is located on 140 acres in the heart of Youngstown in northeastern Ohio, halfway between New York City and Chicago, 70 miles from Cleveland, Ohio and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The campus is small enough to maintain a feeling of friendliness but large enough to offer a spectacular landscape, award-winning residence halls and a diverse student population. The city of Youngstown has a population of 100,000 and another 300,000 people live in the surrounding area. Youngstown is home to a number of established cultural facilities and annual events, and the 49 parks in the area provide a range of sporting and recreational activities.

Admissions
|
New freshmen and transfer students admitted to Youngstown State University are accepted by the WCBA as prebusiness majors.
To retain their status as prebusiness majors, students working toward a baccalaureate degree must make satisfactory progress on the General Education Requirements (GER) and Business Tool Course requirements. To declare a business major, students must have: junior standing; credit in English Writing II and all Business Tool courses completed with a minimum grade of C; and a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
Students pursuing an associate degree must complete English Writing II and all required Business Tool Courses, and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 before they are eligible to enroll in the Business Core Courses and Business Concentration Courses. The AA in business administration articulates fully into the BSBA.
International students must apply to the Office of International Admissions and Recruitment for admission to undergraduate programs. Non-native English speakers are required to provide proof of proficiency in English. A minimum score of 500 is required for the paper-based TOEFL or 173 for the computer-based test. A minimum score of 80 is required for the MELAB.
YSU has two tuition rates for out-of-state students at the university, one for neighboring counties in New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia, and one for all other regions. The first is $9,413.52 per year; the second is $12,393.60 per year. Further information on application requirements and other policies is available from the university's website.

Support for International Students
|
The Center for International Studies and Programs (CISP) provides information and services to international students attending YSU. Staff members help students register for classes, make housing arrangements, comply with US laws and deal with university procedures. CISP staff can also assist with financial, cultural and communications concerns.
International Student Orientation is a required program provided by the CISP to help international students orient themselves to the campus and their new environment. YSU's English Language Institute (ELI) offers English as a Second Language (ESL) programs for students who need to improve their English skills.
Health services are available on campus from the student health clinic, which provides care by licensed physicians and a registered nursing staff.
