Program Overview
The A.J. Palumbo School of Business Administration at Duquesne University (DU) was founded in 1913. During its 95-year history, DU's business program has evolved to keep pace with the world's changing economic focus. The Palumbo School prepares students to achieve their full potential as ethical business professionals and community leaders with an understanding of the global context of business and its social impact. The School of Business accomplishes this through passionate education, creative scholarship and the engagement of partners throughout the community. Ethical responsibility is a core component of DU's four-year bachelor of science in business administration (BSBA) program.

The first two years of the business program include core courses that range from philosophy to theology. Students have the option of specializing in one of 13 fields of study: accounting, accounting information systems, economics, entrepreneurship, finance, information systems management, international business, investment management, leadership and change management, legal studies, marketing, sports marketing, and supply chain management.

DU's location gives its business students a unique opportunity to take advantage of one of the most attractive corporate climates in the US. Companies such as USS, PNC, Mellon Financial Services, Heinz, Alcoa and PPG have their headquarters in the city and many of their senior executives sit on one of the business school's various advisory boards.

Students are encouraged to participate in many off-campus activities designed to help them interact with faculty, students and the community, giving them practical experience in the business world.

In addition, DU has nurtured relationships with educational institutions around the world, enabling students to study abroad.

Limited financial aid is available to qualified international students.

Buildings and Facilities
The A.J. Palumbo School of Business Administration is located in Rockwell Hall, a 10-story newly renovated building with skywalk access between downtown Pittsburgh and the Duquesne University campus.

The school operates an expansive Technology Center on the sixth floor of its facility in Rockwell Hall. The Technology Center consists of an Investment Center and three technology-rich classroom learning centers that provide access to Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software applications, a networking laboratory and general computer laboratory.

The Investment Center allows students to manage real money using advanced software and computer technology. The center provides a range of analytical models and decision-making software tools that allow real-time access to stocks, bonds, futures, currencies and options markets from around the world. The Investment Center uses financial industry gold standards in software and databases, such as Bloomberg, Reuters Bridge Station, Compustat, Morningstar and Ibbotson. Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in the Duquesne Asset Management Group (DAMG), the student group managing the school's investment portfolio. DAMG's philosophy of diversification across broad asset classes has enabled it to consistently outperform the markets and competitors.

Traditionally, the teaching of individual disciplines such as accounting, finance and information systems, in schools of business has concentrated on a specific discipline, with little attention given to its impact on other functional areas. To better explain the integration of functional areas to students of business, DU began using ERP software in their business curricula. ERP systems support and integrate the processes that business organizations need to successfully carry out their activities. The ERP initiative at DU has evolved out of a commitment to the success of students and responsiveness to the skills required by industry.

University and Location
Duquesne University, the world's only Spiritan university, is one of America's leading Catholic universities, with a worldwide reputation of excellence in liberal and professional education. Founded in 1878 by the Spiritans (The congregation of the Holy Spirit), Duquesne is situated on a 49-acre campus overlooking downtown Pittsburgh, one of the prime cultural and corporate climates in the US.

DU boasts the latest in technology in 156 multimedia-enhanced teaching facilities, a multipurpose recreational facility, new football and soccer field, and theater/classroom complex. A 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio and 130-year history have secured Duquesne's place among the country's top Catholic universities.

The university's reputation as an educational leader has translated into both a dramatic rise in student enrollment and the number of agreements signed with universities abroad. Currently, DU has study agreements with institutions in Spain, France, England, Ireland, China, Japan and Italy. Duquesne's efforts to encourage diversity on campus have resulted in a multicultural student body of more than 10,000 from all over the world.

The ethnic and cultural makeup of DU is matched by the city in which it makes its home. Pittsburgh, with a population of nearly 312,000, has consistently ranked as one of the top 10 cities of its size in the US. Once again this year, Pittsburgh has been rated "America's Most Livable City" by The Places Rated Almanac. Professional sports are also an important part of life in Pittsburgh. The city boasts professional baseball, hockey and football teams. The area is also home to outdoor recreational activities that range from golf to soccer. Among the most attractive aspects of the city are the arts and culture, safety and cost of living.

Heavy industry, which was once the economic backbone of the region, has been replaced by education, high technology and corporate services as the city's leading employers. Health care is also a vital link in the area's social and economic life.

Admissions
Undergraduate international students are not required to submit TOEFL results. However, they are required to complete the Duquesne University English Placement Test and any required English language coursework. Students who have obtained a paper-based TOEFL score of at least 525 or 233 on the computer-based test, may be partially exempted from placement tests. Other admissions requirements for international students include graduation from a secondary school recognized as equivalent to a US high school and a demonstrated record of acceptable academic success.

Duquesne has developed policies for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. DU may award up to 30 academic credits to students completing the diploma with a total score of 30 or above. Credit is given for both higher and standard level subjects according to the adviser's discretion. The diploma curriculum must include at least three higher level subjects. Students who do not complete the IB diploma are able to receive advanced standing credit for IB higher level subjects with scores of 5, 6 or 7. An IB standard level score of 6 or 7 is accepted in foreign languages for a maximum of eight semester hours per language. No credit is given for other standard level courses. For a list of credits awarded by discipline, contact the Office of International Programs or an academic adviser.

Domestic students should have graduated with a minimum of a B average and demonstrated exemplary conduct while attending high school. Students who have not completed high school must submit a High School Equivalency Diploma issued by their state department of education. Students may apply at any time during their final year up to July 1 for the fall semester. A $50 application fee must accompany each application.

Support for International Students
In recent years, DU has seen tremendous growth in the number of international students attending the university. With almost 500 international students representing 90 different countries on campus, Duquesne is a diverse place to be.

Activities and services for DU's international students are offered through the Office of International Programs (OIP). All incoming students are in close contact with OIP's International Advisers, available to answer application and immigration questions as students go through the application process. New students are required to attend an orientation program organized by OIP, where students are acclimated to the campus and Pittsburg, as well as being informed about school and immigration policies. OIP's staff are available year-round to offer advice on issues ranging from assessing academic credentials to document preparation and assistance. In addition, OIP's trained personnel can provide personal, financial, cultural and social counseling services.

Student associations and groups also play an important part in the university's support network for international students. The International Student Organization, the Latin American Student Organization and the Asian Student Organization are just a handful of the many different student groups at DU, all of which are a valuable way for international students to familiarize themselves with the campus, the city and the American culture.
