Program Overview
|
The University of Tulsa (TU) Collins College of Business offers a bachelor of science in business administration (BSBA) degree with majors in accounting, economics, energy management, finance, management, management information systems and marketing. A joint bachelor of science program in international business and language (BSIBL) is also offered. Other degree programs lead to a BSN in nursing, BSAT in athletic training and BS in exercise and sports science.
The BSBA curriculum combines a broad general education with a strong business foundation and a concentration in a specific business discipline. The BSBA requires successful completion of 124 hours of coursework, including the Tulsa Curriculum, 12 hours of general electives, a 45-hour business core, 18 to 24 hours of major required courses and three to nine hours of free electives.
The accounting curriculum views the role of accounting as an information development and distribution function for economic decisions. The program emphasizes integrated business, technology and financial knowledge and skills, and the ability to provide professional team leadership. The placement rate of accounting majors has historically been 100 percent.
Economics is primarily concerned with coping with scarcity, a pervasive reality in business and other fields. The goal is to enable students to make informed decisions about their lives and communities long after their college experience. Graduates find occupations in industry, finance, government agencies and not-for-profit organizations.
The energy management program is a unique multidisciplinary energy-based program that incorporates courses from TU's highly respected business, petroleum engineering, geology, law and risk management programs into one curriculum. Students develop a solid foundation in the areas of finance, environmental economics and energy commodity trading in addition to studying various forms of alternative energy.
The finance curriculum's emphasis is on three major areas: financial management, investments and portfolio management, and financial markets and institutions. Students can select a general program or structure their program around one of these specific areas. Each course of study prepares students to approach financial decision-making by analyzing financial data and market information within a framework of economic theory, and to deal with a range of financial problems, including those of business, financial institutions and governments.
The management major provides an understanding of organizational behavior, negotiation skills and managerial functions. Students can choose from specializations in business law, family-owned business and human resources.
Students majoring in management information systems develop an understanding of the significant role of information technologies in the business world. They also develop the skills necessary to employ information technology resources with the objective of enhancing organization and user performance.
The marketing major provides the basis for understanding what influences consumers and how to best develop a strategy to address their needs. It combines theory with practical, hands-on application that equips students to compete in today's marketplace.
The BSIBL degree in international business and language includes four years of language study in French, German, Spanish, Russian or Chinese. It also provides students with the opportunity to develop the tools necessary to compete in the increasingly global marketplace. Completion of a foreign study experience and/or foreign practical business experience is strongly encouraged. An internship in a country where the concentration language is used extensively may be taken for credit.
A joint baccalaureate/master of business administration degree is available.
