 Program Overview
|
The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) School of Management (SOM) offers Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees in business administration, accounting, and finance. Partnered with the business community, UTD programs provide a management education that recognizes changing technology and industry movements toward a global focus. Students learn theories and analytical techniques that apply to practical areas of finance and marketing. They also explore the social and political factors that affect international trade. UTD bachelor's programs typically take four years to complete and require a total of 120 credit hours. Each semester, students take a total of five classes worth three credits each.
The AACSB International accredited business administration program emphasizes the problem-solving techniques most commonly used by modern businesses. Concentrations are offered in finance and management information systems. Finance classes combine economics, accounting and aspects of risk and return. Course topics include corporate finance, money and capital markets, and investment management. The management information systems concentration looks at the analysis and design of business processes. Courses focus on database fundamentals and data structures, systems analysis and design, and business data communications. A business administration/biology double major is available to students wishing to specialize in health care management. The program explores new and efficient managing strategies within the industry.
The AACSB International accredited accounting program consists of 66 lower-division and 54 upper-division credits. Courses balance concepts with practical knowledge and expose students to other related fields. When combined with the Master of Science (MS) in accounting program, students meet the 160-semester-hour educational requirement needed to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination.
A fast-track program exists for students wishing to begin their master's degree before graduation. Participants pursuing a master of business administration (MBA) degree can take up to 12 credit hours toward their graduate degree during their senior year. Students wishing to pursue an MS in accounting may take up to six credit hours. In order to qualify for the fast-track program students must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and approval from their adviser. Students must also meet the admission requirements of the MBA and MS programs including GMAT scores.

| Buildings and Facilities
|
The new 203,000-square-foot UTD School of Management building opened in summer 2003. It features 31 classrooms with modern equipment, wireless connectivity, videoconferencing facilities, two computer labs, faculty and staff offices, meeting rooms and an executive education center.
The University's Eugene McDermott and Callier Libraries hold over three million items including 1,091,577 books, more than 28,409 current periodical subscriptions and 2,779,866 microforms. Library computers have thousands of online full-text articles and documents, periodical indexes and numeric databases. The University also has extensive film, video and audio collections, as well as 364,380 e-books.
The SOM provides students with two modern computer labs and two research labs. University computers are networked for software and Internet access.
The 91,000-square-foot Activities Center houses several recreational and athletic facilities including three full-sized basketball courts, a 25-yard swimming pool, weight room, four racquetball courts, two squash courts and a gym for indoor soccer.

| University and Location
|
The founders of Texas Instruments established The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) in 1969 as an institution for research and development. The university campus covers approximately 500 acres and is surrounded by over 600 telecommunications and advanced technology firms. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered by seven schools, of which the School of Management is the largest. Almost 30% of the University's 14,000-plus students train in management studies.
Student involvement is highlighted by the numerous organizations, team sports, theater and music events active on campus. Student clubs exist for academic and honors groups, service organizations, religious affiliations, ethnic backgrounds and special interest groups. The student newspaper, published twice a month, keeps the campus community informed on topics important to the University. UTD is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III, fielding varsity teams in men's and women's soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, cross country running, men's baseball and women's softball and volleyball. Recreational sports such as volleyball, hockey, rugby and flag football are also enjoyed on campus.
UTD is located in the city of Richardson, 18 miles north of downtown Dallas. Richardson was chartered in 1873, about 30 years after the first settlers arrived from Tennessee and Kentucky. Today the city has a population of more than 99,536 and is home to many technology companies. Richardson is culturally rich: students can take in live music and theater performances and visit art galleries and museums. The city's 29 parks and trails are ideal for picnics and walking. The climate remains temperate throughout much of the year with mild winters and warm summers. Living costs compare well with national averages and are lower than most major American metropolitan areas.

| Admissions
|
Applications to UTD must include official copies of all high school and previous college transcripts, if applicable; SAT or ACT results; and a $50 application fee. The average SAT score among freshmen students is 1245. First-year students can enter the university at the start of the fall, spring or summer semester. Applications for fall admission are due by July 1, while the deadline for spring admission is November 1. Late applications may be processed, but a service fee of $50 is applied. Application forms are available by writing the School of Management's advising office or from the School's website.
International applicants require a TOEFL score of 550 on the paper-based test or a 213 computer-based score. Any non-English documents must be accompanied by an official translation. A $50 international document evaluation fee applies to any student educated outside the US.
All students must complete 42 credit hours of lower level general education and 15 hours of lower level preparatory courses before taking upper level business courses.

| Support for International Students
|
Six percent of undergraduate School of Management students are international students. The International Student Services Office (ISSO) provides individual training and group workshops to help students understand university policies and national immigration regulations. The office issues immigration documents and gives directions on how students can change or adjust their status. The ISSO also provides travel authorization and invitation letters for visiting family members. Mandatory health insurance is available through the office at a minimal cost.
